- Won a Silver Medal in Playa Giron Tournament at age 17, making him the second best welterweight fighter in all of Cuba.
- Coached by three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Teofilo Stevenson.
- Competed on Cuban National Team in multiple international tournaments from age 17 to age 20.
- Cuban World Team alternate at 1978 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Belgrade.
- After nine years in the Cuban National Institute of Sports (INDER), spent a year sparring with fighters around the world before arriving in the United States.
- Professional Muay Thai fighter and Shotokan fighter.
- Former training partners include elite fighters such as Felix Trinidad, Meldrick Taylor, Alberto Cortez, Angel Manfredy, and many others.
