Buffalo Wild Wings Member of the Month: Eric Bourke (October 2009)

Each month, Overtime MMA will feature a member of the month, which is sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings in Plainfield, IL. The member of the month will receive a $20 food certificate to dine at BWW.

The Buffalo Wild Wings Member of the Month for October 2009 is Eric Bourke.

Eric Bourke is 26 years old. He grew up in Bloomington IL, where he played baseball and football in high school. "Back then, I don't think I even knew what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or MMA was," Eric mentioned.

Eric attended Northern Illinois University, and received his degree in manufacturing engineering. Upon graduating from NIU, Eric moved out to the Aurora/Oswego area to work as a Manufacturing Engineer. Eric began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) about a year and a half ago, when he found himself becoming bored with going to the gym after work to lift and run. He missed the competitiveness of sports, which he regained when he began training in BJJ under Mark Turner.

When Eric started training, he used BJJ as just a means of staying in shape. But a year and a half later, he has found it to become a lifestyle. Eric challenges himself by balancing his training with his work, and also competes regularly in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. In his last few outings, he placed first in the men's No-Gi Featherweight division at NAGA Indiana (September 2009), and took home gold and silver medals at the Buckeye Border Grappling Championships in the No-Gi and Gi divisions, respectively (July 2009).

"I am thankful for all of the good instruction I have received from Mark Turner. I have also had the opportunity to take some of the other coaches' classes at Overtime and have been impressed with them as well. What I really like about Overtime is the skill and experience of the coaches, yet they take a humble approach to teaching. I can tell all of them really enjoy what they do," said Eric about his training.

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is Eric's main focus, he mentioned the possibility of trying some boxing classes in the future.
